The new town on the ridge
From the 1950s onward, Cumbernauld grew as planned neighbourhoods along a high spine of ground. Harled terraces and semis, short courts and looping roads still define daily life in much of the town. The concrete megastructure that once dominated the centre is not treated here as a present-day landmark; the neighbourhoods, the village and Palacerigg carry the sense of place instead.
Neighbourhoods you will hear named in ordinary conversation include Kildrum, Seafar, Ravenswood, Carbrain, Greenfaulds, Abronhill, Craigmarloch, Westfield, Balloch, Carrickstone, Smithstone, Eastfield, Blairlinn and Wardpark. Condorrat keeps an older grain beside the new-town fabric.

Cumbernauld Village and Condorrat
Cumbernauld Village predates the new town. Its conservation-area streets — tighter, more stone, with slate roofs and a medieval street pattern in the historic core — feel different from the planned estates. Condorrat, to the west, likewise keeps older street lines among later housing. Window choices on these streets often need a slower look at proportions than a standard new-town opening.
Culture and civic life nearby includes the Lanternhouse performing arts centre on the academy campus in Kildrum, and the open ground of Palacerigg Country Park to the south-east of the town.
